I'll be honest with you...
For years, I looked at cruise holidays and thought they looked nice, but I wasn't convinced they were really for me.
Would I get bored? Would I feel trapped on a ship? Would I get seasick? Would it feel crowded?
After spending a week on my first cruise, I can officially say that I was completely wrong.
Not only did I love it, but I'm already looking at future cruise itineraries. (My husband may want to hide the credit card at this point.)
If you're considering your first cruise and you're not quite sure what to expect, let me tell you exactly what it was like.
First Impressions: It's Basically a Floating City
The first thing that surprised me was the size of the ship. I knew cruise ships were big, but seeing one in person is completely different.
When we arrived at the port and saw the ship towering above everything else, it felt more like boarding a resort than getting on a boat.
Inside, there were restaurants, bars, pools, theatres, shops, lounges, live music, activities, and enough food to keep a small nation happy.
For the first hour, I genuinely felt like I needed Google Maps to find my cabin.
The Biggest Surprise: You Never Get Bored
Before the cruise, I imagined there might be moments where I'd be staring at the ocean wondering what to do next... That never happened. Not even once.
Every day there was something happening somewhere on the ship.
Live music. Dance classes. Trivia quizzes. Shows. Pool activities. Games. Fitness classes.
The theatre performances were surprisingly good, and there was always something happening if you wanted entertainment.
Or... if you're like me sometimes and simply want to sit with a coffee and stare at the sea pretending you're the main character in a movie, that's perfectly acceptable too.
Sea Days Were Actually My Favourite
One thing I wasn't expecting was how much I would enjoy the days at sea.
Most people get excited about the destinations (which were amazing), but the sea days became some of my favourite moments.
There's something incredibly relaxing about waking up with absolutely no plans. No rushing. No trains. No airport security. No dragging a suitcase over cobblestones.
Just breakfast, sunshine, ocean views and deciding what you feel like doing next.
Honestly, it felt like pressing pause on real life for a few days.
What About Internet?
Let's talk about the thing everyone secretly worries about. The internet. Yes, you can buy Wi-Fi packages on most cruise ships. But here's the funny thing...
We didn't buy one.
And after the first few hours, I barely noticed.
When you're watching the sunset from the deck, exploring a new destination every day, enjoying dinner, going to shows and actually talking to people, checking social media suddenly doesn't seem quite so important.
It was surprisingly refreshing.
I didn't realise how much I needed a break from constant notifications until they disappeared.
Did I Feel Seasick?
This was one of my biggest concerns.
The good news?
Most of the time I forgot I was even on a ship. Of course, the sea conditions can vary, but during our cruise the movement was minimal. There were a few moments when I noticed a gentle sway, but nothing dramatic.
In fact, I spent more time worrying about it before the trip than I did during the trip.
Classic overthinking.
Waking Up in a Different Destination Every Day
This might have been my favourite part. One morning you're wandering through the beautiful streets of Mykonos. The next you're exploring ancient ruins in Ephesus. Then you're enjoying Italy. Every day felt like a completely different holiday.
And the best part? You only unpack once. Honestly, whoever invented cruises deserves an award just for that.
Would I Do It Again?
Without hesitation. Absolutely. A cruise turned out to be one of the most relaxing and surprisingly fun holidays I've ever taken.
It combines the excitement of visiting multiple destinations with the comfort of having the same room, the same bed and all your belongings with you the entire time.
For first-time cruisers who are unsure, I would say this:
Don't overthink it. I certainly did. And I ended up loving every minute of it. In fact, the only problem now is deciding which cruise to book next.
